April 22 is Earth Day

Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970, it is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.

Some of the more interesting events happening tomorrow are:

Navy’s Green Hornet to Launch on Earth Day – A test flight of an F/A-18 jet called the Green Hornet is scheduled to take off tomorrow over the Chesapeake Bay. The Green Hornet is to make a supersonic flight on biofuel, which is made from the crushed seeds of the flowering Camelina sativa plant.

NASA’s Earth Day Gift – NASA put together NEX, a super-computer which blends global satellite data and sophisticated modeling software with an online collaborative culture aimed at helping scientists work together toward better climate change research. NEX, which stands for NASA Earth Exchange, will hopefully increase the global output of useful, reliable climate data.
