Mayors normally bestow ceremonial keys on heroes and celebrities which is a symbolic gesture of gratitude or appreciation. This summer in New York City, a public art project sponsored by Creative Time has created 25,000 functional keys to the city that opens 24 sites around New York. Visitors can get keys at a kiosk in Times Square from June 3rd to June 27th. Most of the locks can be opened through Labor Day.
