The east coast is in the midst of a bad heat wave right now and those triple digit temperatures have an interesting effect on our behavior and how we handle the heat. My parents have decided to beat the heat by taking a vacation to Canada. For those of us that have to stay put, we find ourselves doing a great deal of swimming and cranking up the air conditioning. Another odd thing the heat does is it makes us want to cook less and that makes sense when you think about it. Stoves, ovens, and grills throw off quite a bit heat especially if you don’t have air conditioning and that’s the last thing you want to deal with after spending a day in 100 degree heat.
Fortunately for us we live in a society where we don’t have to cook up all of our meals if we don’t want to. Restaurants have done take out and delivery for decades but the internet has made the process of getting that food so much more convenient especially if you’re in a well populated area. Now you can see all of the restaurants will deliver to your home as well as reviews and their hours of operation all in a single interface. With some restaurants you don’t even have to call them to place an order. You can do it all online. The Boston Globe recently put together a list of some of the best food delivery sites on the internet right now:
Also having worked in that industry in the past here are a few things I can tell you about it. If you think that your kitchen gets hot when you’re cooking in the summer, a restaurant kitchen is at least 15 degrees hotter. Also tip delivery drivers like you would tip a waitress at a restaurant. They’re paid in the exact same fashion as waitresses except they usually have to foot the bill for the gas they use to get your food to you. If your food is late, 90 percent of the time it’s because the kitchen is backed up on orders not because of anything the driver did.
