NYC’s East Side Access Project

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s East Side Access project will connect the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Main and Port Washington lines in Queens to a new LIRR terminal beneath Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The new connection will increase the LIRR’s capacity into Manhattan, and dramatically shorten travel time for Long Island and eastern Queens commuters traveling to the east side of Manhattan.  The project which carved 5.6 miles of tunnels and the massive caverns that will house the new station under Grand Central started in 2006.  It was scheduled to be operational in 2014, but has been delayed to 2019 due to the complexity of the project.  Weekly progress photos for all East Side Access contracts can now be found on the MTA’s Flicker photostream.
