Best French Fries in the United States

Come on admit it, there is nothing better than a crispy, golden brown, salted French fry. Right?

CNN Travel‘s article, lists where to get the “Best French fries in the United States.”

1. Boise Fry Company, Idaho: Their slogan is “Burgers on the Side” and with Idaho being known for their potatoes, this place was destined to have killer fries. Customers can choose from six varieties of potato, then the cut, then the dressing. What could be better than a fry customized to your craving?!

2. The Breslin Bar & Dining Room, NYC:This hip place is known for their thrice-cooked chips. Long, medium-thick slices of Idaho russet potatoes are first boiled, then fried twice in a sunflower/canola oil blend. Then they get a pinch of salt. Try them with the restaurant’s Cuban mayo.

3. The Original Hot Dog Shop, Pittsburgh:Known for dishing out fries piled a mile high, The Original Hot Dog Shop makes their fries using hand-cut, and peeled Idaho potatoes which are friend twice in peanut oil. Served perfectly golden and crunch on a cafeteria tray, this place will bring back the nostalgia of the good old days.

4. Duckfat, Maine:Duckfat uses locally grown potatoes for their famous fries which are fried twice in duck fat allowing the outside to get super crisp while the inside remains tender. Served in a paper cone alongside specially made dips like mussel mayo and chopped egg and caper mayo, these fries are unusually made but delicious.

5. Jasper’s Corner Tap, San Francisco: With a menu devoted specifically to fries, this place has to be a winner! Choose your fry, thin, thick, or sweet potato, then your seasoning. Folks say that the smoked cheese fondue that is served as a side for dipping is “to die for.”

6. Pike Street Fish, Seattle: Known for Seattle’s best fish and chips, this place serves hand-sliced fries that are fried to “perfection,” along with delectable dipping sauces. The tangy chili mayo is a favorite. Even better, fries are FREE every third Friday of the month from 5PM to 7PM.

7. The Green Room, South Carolina: The Chef here, Patrick Long, specializes in Parmesan truffle fries, shoestring cut, and immediately tossed in truffle oil after being taken from the fryer. He then finishes them with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley.

8. Bourbon Steak, Miami: Celeb chef Michael Mina offers mid-thick cuts of potato that are dunked in duck fat for the ultimate flavor and crispiness. An order covers three seasonings and sauce combos including rosemary herb with spicy ketchup, onion-dusted with sour cream sauce, and smoked paprika with smoked BBQ sauce. YUM!

9. Jonesy’s EatBar, Denver: Continually voted as Denver’s best fries, these thick-cut, extra crispy spuds are out of this world. They also come in four “World Famous” and original varieties like Buffalo (loaded in wing sauve and blue cheese crumbles with a side of dressing) and Bacon Mac & Cheese.

10. Thrasher’s, Maryland: Simply put, these are the ultimate “Boardwalk Fry.” These hand-cut fries are freid in peanut oil with the skins still on and served with salk & vineagar in a big bucket. The smallest bucket is 16oz and the largest weighs in at 53oz!

Seattle’s Underground City

Vivaboo.com’s article Seattle’s Hidden Past Lies In Its Underground City details Seattle’s underground city below Pioneer Square. The underground city was the result of  the “Great Fire of 1889″ which devastated approximately 25-30 city blocks. New buildings were built on top of the ruins and the underground city was created. Underground city tours are available where visitors can roam the subterranean passages that once were the main roadways and first-floor storefronts of old downtown Seattle.

Askmen.com has published their list of Top 10: Rock Cities which they have defined as “…a place that lives and breaths the music…” and where music is “…integral part of the cultural fabric.” The list is dominated by US cities with Los Angeles coming in #1 on the list. Famous venues such as The Greek Theatre, The Roxy, and The Troubadour serve as the backdrop of the rise of a half-dozen musical genres.  New York City, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Boston, and San Francisco also made the list.

The list focuses on cities where governments, universities and business communities work together to supercharge the region’s economic engine. With a low unemployment rate, Washington DC comes in at number three; With business friendly taxes and zoning laws, Seattle, Washington comes in at number two; Austin, Texas‘s mix of community programs, venture-capital funds and business associations pushes Austin to the number one spot on the list.

The 25 greatest cities in the world for drinking wine

Gadling.com has recently published their list of The 25 greatest cities in the world for drinking wine. While cities like Valencia, Spain and  Montalcino, Italy are not a surprise to make the list, there are several unexpected locations in the United States that show up on the list.

Walla Walla, Washington – Walla Walla has slowly turned into one of the world’s hottest wine regions. Located outside of Seattle, there are numerous vineyards including the highly acclaimed Pepper Bridge Winery.

Tampa, Florida – While not close to any wine region, The Florida Wine Festival, held every April in nearby Sarasota, is one event oenophiles can’t miss.

Men’s Health has released their list of The Best and Worst Cities for Men 2010. The list features 100 cities and was based on 35 criterias such as air quality, employment, life expectancy, death rate and commute times. The top city of the 2010 list is Seattle, WA which was ranked as one of the most literate and educated cities in America. Madison, WI and San Jose, CA round out the top three cities. The worst city on the list was Birmingham, AL.

Top 25 Cities For Artists & Designers

Artbistro.com has named the Top 25 Cities For Designers and Artists. The criteria for the list included the cities’ growth rates, average salaries, costs of living and the rate of unemployment increase since February 2008. Some notable cities on the list include Hartford, CT which made #24 on the list and Nashville, TN which was #15 on the list.

The World’s Smartest Cities

Forbes.com has release their list of The World’s Smartest Cities. This list of ten cities was elected based on infrastructure, livability and economic fundamentals. Mega-cities like New York and Tokyo were excluded due to “megalopolitian elephantasis“, which is a term urban historians use to describe out of control real estate prices and expanding income disparities.

Four of the ten cities: Seattle, Houston, Charleston, and Huntsville are from the United States. Seattle and Houston make the list with their strong transportation infrastructure along with their use of green energy. Charleston and Huntsville join the list by emerging as major players in the technology sector.

9 Asymmetrical Landmarks

Womansday.com’s article, 9 Astonishingly Asymmetrical Buildings,  profile 9 modern architectural marvels around the world. The list includes buildings from Abu Dhabi to the Netherlands but also highlight 3 structures in the United States; The Seattle Central Library, Denver Art Museum’s Frederic C. Hamilton Building and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Seattle Central Library is a 11 story glass and steel building located in downtown Seattle, Washington. It features over 1.45 million books and was voted one of American Institute of Architect’s 150 favorite structures in the US. The building is designed by Dutch Architect Rem Koolhaas who was voted by Time as the top 100 of The World’s Most Influential People in 2008.

The Denver Art Museum’s Frederic C. Hamilton Building, located in Denver, Colorado, was designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, who was also selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center site in New York City. The building took almost 7 years to build, starting in November 1999 and opening to the public in October 2006.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall, located in Downtown Los Angeles, California, is the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra. The building, designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry, features an exterior made of stainless steel curves and  interior walls made of douglas fir. The concert hall opened in October 2003 and has received praise for it’s unique architecture and superior acoustics.
