CNN Travel‘s article, lists where to get the “Best French fries in the United States.”

1. Boise Fry Company, Idaho: Their slogan is “Burgers on the Side” and with Idaho being known for their potatoes, this place was destined to have killer fries. Customers can choose from six varieties of potato, then the cut, then the dressing. What could be better than a fry customized to your craving?!

2. The Breslin Bar & Dining Room, NYC:This hip place is known for their thrice-cooked chips. Long, medium-thick slices of Idaho russet potatoes are first boiled, then fried twice in a sunflower/canola oil blend. Then they get a pinch of salt. Try them with the restaurant’s Cuban mayo.

3. The Original Hot Dog Shop, Pittsburgh:Known for dishing out fries piled a mile high, The Original Hot Dog Shop makes their fries using hand-cut, and peeled Idaho potatoes which are friend twice in peanut oil. Served perfectly golden and crunch on a cafeteria tray, this place will bring back the nostalgia of the good old days.

4. Duckfat, Maine:Duckfat uses locally grown potatoes for their famous fries which are fried twice in duck fat allowing the outside to get super crisp while the inside remains tender. Served in a paper cone alongside specially made dips like mussel mayo and chopped egg and caper mayo, these fries are unusually made but delicious.

Boston: Free Ice Cream Sandwiches

Boston.com is reporting that Hood (dairy brands) plans to give away free ice cream sandwiches Thursday at City Hall Plaza.  The ice-cream free-for-all is scheduled to run Thursday from noon to 2 p.m., rain or shine, Lynnfield-based Hood said. Thursday, August 2nd is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day and giveaways are also scheduled for other cities like Hampton Beach, N.H.; Portland, Me.; and West Hartford, Conn.

Livescience.com reveals the 10 Healthiest and Safest Metro Areas. The survey included 187 metro areas, and was based on responses from 353,000 American adults interviewed by telephone in 2009. The survey included questions about safe places to exercise, easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables, money for food and shelter, access to clean water and to health care. The top 10 cities are:

The 5 Best Cities to Land a Green Job

The Daily Green’s article, The 5 Best Cities to Land a Green Job, reports that the economic stimulus package and the American Clean Energy and Security Act could help create as many as 270,000 new green jobs in the U.S. between now and 2020. According to the article, the federal stimulus bill contained more than $30 billion for clean energy and while every state share a piece of the stimulus money, here are the five cities that are faring best.

New York City – Mayor Bloomberg launched PlaNYC, a program featuring 127 green initiatives for the city.

San Francisco – The Earthlab foundation ranks San Francisco as the third greenest city in the U.S. and voters recently approved $100 million in revenue bonds to support renewable energy.

Boston/Cambridge – Boston ranks as number four in the Clean Edge survey of 15 top U.S. metro areas for clean-tech job creation.

Detroit – Department of Energy green-tech grants are funding a revival in the Motor City. Clean Edge identifies the green transportation sector as one of four growth areas, and that benefits the cluster of companies making hybrid and electric vehicles in the greater Detroit area.

Portland – Pew Charitable Trusts reports Oregon was the number one performer in creating clean energy economy jobs last year. With its explosion of green buildings and commitment to renewable energy, Portland ranks high on many green cities list.

America’s Greenest Cities

Popular Science published their list of America’s 50 Greenest Cities which bases the findings on raw data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society’s Green Guide. The stats are compiled into four categories (electricity, transportation, green living and recycling/green perspective) and the combine score determined the final ranking.

The top cities on the list are:

Portland, Oregon – A quarter of the workforce commutes by bike, carpool or public transportation. Couple that with the fact half of Portlan’s power is from renewable resources lands Portland the top spot.

San Francisco, California – San Francisco earns the number 2 spot by turning roof space into solar power.

Boston, Massachusetts – Boston’s transportation system puts Boston in the number 3 spot. The T is the busiest light-rail system in America.
