The 10 Best Cities for Electric Cars

Thedailygreen.com takes a look at the places where electric cars could have the biggest impact. The article, based on a blog post form General Electric, uses data from the Census Bureau and study the commuting habits of people in the 25 biggest metropolitan areas to determine the 10 best cities for electric cars. It also factors in the percentage of commuters who drive to work and live within 50 miles of the job, and how the region is set up to handle the needs of car commuters.

The 10 cities where electric cars could have the biggest impact are:

Dallas has 2.7 million commuters who live within 50 miles of the city center with 91.5 percent of commuters currently drive to work.

Houston has 2.4 million commuters within 50 miles of downtown, 90 percent of whom drive to work.

Detroit -  92.5 percent of its 1.6 million commuters drive to work. Although Detroit has a inconvenient monorail system, which makes a very circumscribed loop around the core downtown.

St. Louis, Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix, Tampa, Cincinnati and Sacramento round out the list.

NYC Named America’s Richest City

Luxist.com has named NYC as America’s Richest City. According to the new Metro Wealth Index, New York has a record 667,000 high-net worth individuals, or people with $1 million or more in investible assets, recorded as living there in 2009. Rounding out the top 3 are Los Angeles and Chicago. Here are the tallies of millionaires for the top 10, along with the percentage growth from the Wall Street Journal:

New York – 667,200, +18.7%
Los Angeles – 235,800, +13.3%
Chicago – 198,100, +15.1%
Washington, D.C. – 152,400 +19.3%
San Francisco – 138,300 +14.5%
Philadelphia – 104,100, +20.1%
Boston – 102,300, + 14.4%
Detroit – 89,100, +12.1%
Houston –- 88,200, +28.9%
San Jose — 86,500, +24.5%

Top 10 Rock Cities in the World

Askmen.com has published their list of Top 10: Rock Cities which they have defined as “…a place that lives and breaths the music…” and where music is “…integral part of the cultural fabric.” The list is dominated by US cities with Los Angeles coming in #1 on the list. Famous venues such as The Greek Theatre, The Roxy, and The Troubadour serve as the backdrop of the rise of a half-dozen musical genres.  New York City, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Boston, and San Francisco also made the list.

The 5 Best Cities to Land a Green Job

The Daily Green’s article, The 5 Best Cities to Land a Green Job, reports that the economic stimulus package and the American Clean Energy and Security Act could help create as many as 270,000 new green jobs in the U.S. between now and 2020. According to the article, the federal stimulus bill contained more than $30 billion for clean energy and while every state share a piece of the stimulus money, here are the five cities that are faring best.

New York City – Mayor Bloomberg launched PlaNYC, a program featuring 127 green initiatives for the city.

San Francisco – The Earthlab foundation ranks San Francisco as the third greenest city in the U.S. and voters recently approved $100 million in revenue bonds to support renewable energy.

Boston/Cambridge – Boston ranks as number four in the Clean Edge survey of 15 top U.S. metro areas for clean-tech job creation.

Detroit – Department of Energy green-tech grants are funding a revival in the Motor City. Clean Edge identifies the green transportation sector as one of four growth areas, and that benefits the cluster of companies making hybrid and electric vehicles in the greater Detroit area.

Portland – Pew Charitable Trusts reports Oregon was the number one performer in creating clean energy economy jobs last year. With its explosion of green buildings and commitment to renewable energy, Portland ranks high on many green cities list.
