Washingtonpost.com’s Smithsonian reports dip in visitors and increase in donations highlights the visitor trends of 2011. While the number of visitors dipped 2%, the donations have increased to $182 million. Smithsonian officials site summer weather, with a string of hot days, followed by an earthquake and hurricane as the main reasons for the traffic drop off. Despite the dip in visitors, the Smithsonian’s business division is in excellent financial shape, experiencing its 5th year of net growth.

Shop Vintage In An Art Space Across From Howard University

Washingtonian.com reports on pop-up shops in the DC area. Trash Cat Collective will be filling up the Pleasant Plains Workshop with vintage clothing, accessories, and housewares for an entire month. Established in the fall of 2010, the Trash Cat Collective is known for selling and trading quirky finds sourced from all over the country. The Trash Cat Collective takeover of Pleasant Plains workshop (2806 Georgia Ave., NW; 202-415-1466) runs Saturday, January 28, through February 25. Opening hours are Thursdays and Fridays 2 to 7 PM, Saturdays 1 to 6, and Sundays noon to 5.

NY Camera Store Gets Virtual Tour From Google Street View

Wired.com highlights a recently released feature of Google Street View which lets you go inside participating businesses remotely and take a look around. B&H’s photo and video store in Manhattan, is one of the first to invite Google into their establishments. Google scanned in the first floor of the superstore, using GPS devices to ensure the location services were accurate. However, technology is not in place to offer street view on upper floors of the store.

Usatoday.com recaps President Obama singing Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’. The president was on stage at the Apollo Theater on January 19th in Harlem, NY for a fund raiser event. He stepped to the podium, veered from prepared remarks to thank Green for warming up the crowd, and broke into song. The crowd of 1400 cheered and applauded the president’s song of appreciation.

The King of NYC’s Galette des Rois

King cake season is here and newyork.grubstreet.com highlights some of New York City’s best bakeries. King cake celebrates the Epiphany, the day the Three Kings visited Baby Jesus, and the season lasts until Mardi Gras. The New Orleans version is covered with purple and green frosting, but a traditional French galette des rois consists of layers of puff pastry with an almond filling and a small, potentially tooth-chipping favor hidden inside. Whoever wins it gets to be king or queen for a day.

Former President’s Grandiose Appetite

Washingtonian’s current issue has some humorous tidbits about former President Bill Clinton’s appetite.

Roland Mesnier worked as a White House pastry chef for 26 years starting with the Carter administration and recently recalled some fond memories about Clinton claiming that the man’s appetite was “scary!” According to Mesnier, Clinton could polish off an astounding five or six pork shops in one sitting and the kitchen staff “had to be ready” to accommodate his requests.

Clinton loved dessert but had food allergies to both chocolate and flour, two ingredients that can be considered stables in many dessert recipes. Mesnier recalled an evening when he made a strawberry cake that the Commander-in-chief polished off half of all on his own. The next morning, he came back for more but the cake was MIA causing Clinton to throw quite a temper tantrum. Mesnier says of the incident, “Clinton was pounding on the table and shouting, ‘I want my [bleep] cake!” Mesnier was able to diffuse the situation with a little humor by coyly blaming Vice President Al Gore for devouring the other half.

Mesnier is now a lecturer and author of three books including his memoir All the Presidents’ Pastries where he details his life as a White House pastry chef and other comical White House kitchen crises.

Metropolitan Museum of Art to Dedicate a Department to 20th & 21st Century Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has recently enlisted a well-known London curator to oversee a new department that will be devoted to art of the 20^th & 21^st centuries. Her name is Sheena Wagstaff and has been the head curator of Tate Modern, a UK museum that collects international modern & contemporary art.

Wagstaff’s new position comes forth as the Met prepares to take over the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Marcel Breuer building located at Madison Ave & 75^th Street in three years when the Whitney moves to its new location in the meatpacking district. Plans are to use the Breuer location as a home for Modern and contemporary art while the Met’s current galleries are being renovated.

The decision to dedicate a department solely to Modern & contemporary art is seen as a step forward for the museum because they haven’t been able to compete with museums like the MoMa, which specializes in contemporary art. While some feel that this isn’t a smart move on behalf of the Met, Thomas P. Campbell, the Met’s director, and Wagstaff both disagree and vow to incorporate contemporary art more prominently that it has been displayed in the past since it is an important aspect in today’s world of art.
