What Makes a City Green?

National Geographic’s Green Guide asks the question, “What Makes a City Green?“  They came up with twelve criteria that can rate “how green” cities are. The criteria are air quality, electricity used and production, environmental perspective, environmental policy, green design, green space, public health, recycling, socioeconomic factors, transportation and water quality. Each of these factors was equally weighted, with a maximum score of 1 point per criterion, to create an overall maximum possible score of 11 points, though only one city, Eugene, Oregon, scored 9 or better.

First Skate at Fenway

The 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be played on New Year’s Day at Fenway Park in Boston.  This will be the third NHL Winter Classic in the U.S. and will be the first time at Fenway Park.  The Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins will face off on a 200 x 85 foot rink that extends from first to third base.

According to MLB, “The first Winter Classic was in 2008, pinning the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Last year’s Winter Classic at Wrigley Field — between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks — attracted the largest audience for a regular-season NHL game in 34 years.”

If you would like a chance to skate at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Soxs have a raffle where 75 winners and their guest will be chosen to attend a one-hour group skate on Jan 9th, shortly after the 2010 Winter Classic. You can get more information at redsox.com/skate. Proceeds will benefit The Red Sox Foundation which serves the health, education, recreation, and social service needs of children and families in need across New England.
