While the number of visitors dipped 2%, the donations have increased to $182 million. Smithsonian officials site summer weather, with a string of hot days, followed by an earthquake and hurricane as the main reasons for the traffic drop off. Despite the dip in visitors, the Smithsonian’s business division is in excellent financial shape, experiencing its 5th year of net growth.
